The Mills House: Charleston, South Carolina

As many may know, the 2012 GOP presidential primaries are going on in South Carolina at this time.  The MSNBC show called "Morning Joe" is currently filming from The Mills House hotel in Charleston.  This is a very historic and grand hotel which is home to our Culinary, Historic Plantations, On the Road Homes and Gardens, and Southern Trilogy programs.

Program # 5907: Southern Serenade: Cruising the Intracoastal Waterway

Focus on rich history, natural beauty and music as you sail among and visit the grand antebellum homes, quaint fishing villages, birding habitats, barrier islands and saltwater marshes that compose the protected Intracoastal Waterway of the Old South.

Program #1384: Island-Hopping Adventure on Three Barrier Islands: St. Simons, Sapelo, Jekyll

Go “island hopping” to experience firsthand the rich history and ecology of three barrier islands, from Civil War-era forts and lighthouses to the lavish R.J. Reynolds Mansion. Lush cottages, gorgeous sandy beaches, culinary delights and fascinating cultural and maritime histories combine for a magical adventure. Highlights • Enjoy an abbreviated lecture on the history of Jekyll Island in preparation for your field trip to Jekyll with lunch at the Jekyll Island Club hotel. • Explore the battlegrounds, old slave quarters, evocative churches, lighthouse and pristine beaches of St. Simons. • After a ferry ride to Sapelo Island, join a local expert to learn the stories of the island and enjoy lunch at the R.J. Reynolds Mansion. Activity Particulars Walking up to a half-mile, including beach and marsh walks; ferry ride to Sapelo. Coordinated by Center for Educational Adventure. St. Simons Island Pristine waters and white sandy beaches make St. Simons Island a popular destination. Part of the Golden Isles, the landscape’s moss-draped oaks, shady lanes and creek-fed pockets of marsh create a thriving habitat for birds, turtles, armadillos and deer.

Program #11603: Amelia and Cumberland Islands and the Okefenokee Swamp

 

Encounter vivid natural and human history on two beautiful islands and amazing Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. Hike the interior maritime forest of Amelia and Cumberland islands with a naturalist, boat into the Okefenokee Swamp and end your week with an Amelia River study cruise to view rare birds, dolphins and manatees.


Highlights

• Discover the historic streets and architecture of Amelia Island with an expert who shares the story of a visionary who stirred neighbors to move their entire town.
• A soldier in period costume details the fascinating history of Fort Clinch, an important 1800s fortress for both Confederate and Union forces.
• Venture deep into the mysterious Okefenokee Swamp on a two-hour boat ride and 1.5-mile boardwalk exploration to experience black water lakes, pond cypress and the American alligator.

Walking up to four miles on Cumberland Island day hike; optional shorter hike. Okefenokee boat trip in a covered motorized boat with open sides.

Program # 19280: Savor Charleston's Culinary History, Heritage and Delectable Flavors

The program attended Charleston Cooks!, owned and operated by Maverick Southern Kitchens, where a live cooking demonstration was presented to the group. Incredible facilities and outstanding presenters. This is truly a first class operation. Charleston was recently named "America's Paris" by Vanity Fair and recieved the #2 ranking in Travel Leisure World’s Best Awards 2011 list of “Top Cities in the United States and Canada,” and the magazine also recently named Charleston one of the “Top 10 Food Cities” in the country.
